“DEVOLIN
ANNOUNCES OVER $18,000 FOR COMMUNITY CARE -
HALIBURTON
COUNTY
”
WILBERFORCE:
Local MP Barry Devolin, on behalf of the Honourable
Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social
Development, and the Honourable Marjory LeBreton, Leader
of the Government in the Senate and Secretary of State (Seniors),
today congratulated Community Care –
Haliburton
County
on being selected to receive funding under the New Horizons for
Seniors Program (NHSP).
Total
funding of $18,300 is being provided for the project entitled “When
we Were Young”. The
money will be used to bring Haliburton County seniors together
with grade 5 and 6 students from Wilberforce Elementary School to
create an illustrated short story book featuring the seniors'
stories of their youth; to participate jointly in artist run
workshops on writing, illustrating, drama, puppetry and mask
production; to adapt the stories from the book to develop and
perform a multi-medium, inter-generational theatrical production
using puppetry, drama and masks.
The theatrical production will be a public performance
available to all members of the community.
“The
Government of Canada is proud to support seniors in strengthening
our communities and building our country. This
project will encourage seniors to continue sharing their skills,
wisdom and experience to benefit others,” said Devolin.
”I would like to thank Donna MacDonald and her team at
Community Care –
Haliburton
County
. Their vision for
this project is something to be admired and I am pleased to have
the opportunity to announce funding to assist in this worthwhile
venture.”
"We
are thrilled to have our intergenerational project chosen as it
provides an opportunity for seniors and students to come together
in a meaningful way," said Donna MacDonald, Executive
Director,
Community
Care
Haliburton
County
. "Seniors and students will be involved in all aspects of
the project together to encourage greater opportunities to share
stories, develop new skills, create and perform together, and
develop meaningful and lasting relationships."
Since
its launch, the NHSP has funded over 2,600 projects across
Canada
, inspiring seniors to bring their leadership, energy and skills
to projects that benefit our communities. For more information
