DEVOLIN KICKS OFF REPAIRS TO THE MISSISSAUGA RIVER BRIDGE

BUCKHORN – Local MP Barry Devolin, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister responsible for the Canada-Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF); Jeff Leal, MPP for Peterborough; and Ronald Gerow, Warden for the County of Peterborough held a groundbreaking ceremony to officially start construction of the Mississauga River Bridge.

The Mississauga River Bridge, located on County Road 36, will be replaced with a new two-lane steel girder structure to be installed immediately north of the existing bridge.

Canada’s New Government and the Government of Ontario will each invest up to $404,731 to replace Mississauga River Bridge. The County of Peterborough will contribute the balance of the total eligible project cost of up to $1,214,194.

“The federal government is pleased to invest more than $400,000 in the replacement of the Mississauga River Bridge in the County of Peterborough,” said Devolin. “Through this contribution, we are helping to ensure the continued economic and social development of this area, which is highly dependent on a reliable transportation network.”

“The County of Peterborough is excited to continue improvements to our infrastructure and meet the needs of our growing economy,” said Warden Gerow. “The Mississauga River Bridge is an important project in our Transportation Plan, and we appreciate the partnership of the provincial and federal governments in this endeavour.”

Under COMRIF, the governments of Canada and Ontario are working together with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and local partners to improve public infrastructure in small urban and rural communities. COMRIF is a five-year,
$900-million program that responds to local needs through infrastructure upgrades to provide clean, safe drinking water, better sewage systems, improved waste management processes, safer local roads and bridges, as well as other health and safety priorities.
