DEVOLIN CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF BUCKHORN AREA WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS

September 8, 2007

BUCKHORN — Local MP Barry Devolin marked the completion of the Buckhorn Lake and Alpine Village water system upgrade project. Barry, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Minister responsible for the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program (COIP), and Tom Flynn, Reeve of the Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey, were pleased to see this important COIP project come to fruition while attending today’s official opening ceremony.

Upgrades to the Buckhorn Lake Estates water system included addition of an ultra-violet cartridge filter treatment system, installation of a chlorine analyzer with recorder and alarms, and the construction of wellhead protection. The Alpine Village system improvements included the installation of an in-ground chlorine contact tank, a second sodium hypochlorite tank, an upgrade to the standby power system, and development of a new well.

The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario each committed up to $418,789 to the project. The Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey invested the balance of the project's total eligible cost of $1,256,367.

“Canada’s New Government recognizes that safe, reliable water treatment facilities are an essential part of our communities,” said Devolin. “Through a federal Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program investment of more than $400,000, the Township of Galway-Cavendish and Harvey was able to make the necessary improvements to the water system here, making a real difference in the lives of residents.”

COIP is one of a series of matching federal and provincial investments to help municipalities protect the health and safety of their residents through essential infrastructure projects, totaling over $1.3 billion to date in Ontario.
