DEVOLIN WORKS TO BRING MORE DOCTORS TO RIDING

November 15, 2005

CANNINGTON – At a recent meeting with the Brock Township Community Health Centre Team, local MP Barry Devolin unveiled an initiative he is undertaking to lure family physicians into Brock Township, Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough County and Haliburton County.

"I’m sending letters to family physicians and specialists in the Greater Toronto Area to let them know the benefits of living and practicing in this area," explained Devolin. "I know that I am fortunate to be able to pursue my career in public life, while still being able to make my home and raise my young family in a peaceful rural setting. And I want physicians in Toronto to know that this opportunity is available to their families too."

"Each of these 2,500 letters will describe the many benefits of living in a rural community," said Devolin. "In our communities people know their neighbours, have a variety of recreational activities in their backyard, and enjoy a peaceful lifestyle that does not include traffic jams or Sunday night drives back to the city.

"I also want to point out other attractions that many in Toronto might not expect in our rural communities. We have art galleries, performing arts facilities, a fine arts college, first class recreation facilities, and excellent fine dining and entertainment options," stated Devolin. "And as a result of the steady migration of people out of the GTA in recent years, our supermarkets, retailers and a wide range of service providers now offer many desirable things previously available only in larger cities. The bottom line is: this is a great place to live, work and raise a family."

"I hope to appeal to doctors who love visiting our area – and might consider moving here. We need more doctors in this area so that we can reduce the number of people currently without a family doctor in their hometown," said Devolin.
