“DEVOLIN
ELECTED CHAIR OF THE ABORIGINAL AND NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT
COMMITTEE”
OTTAWA
– Local MP Barry Devolin has been elected Chair of the House of
Commons Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern
Development. This follows his appointment to the committee earlier
this month by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
“I
am really excited about this new role,” stated Devolin.
“Aboriginal Affairs is a critical department in the federal
government, and last month’s Speech from the Throne identified
northern issues and Arctic sovereignty as one of our Conservative
Government's five priorities.”
“
Canada
has both opportunities and challenges in the north. These include
retreating polar ice caps, rising global demand for resources and
the prospect of year-round shipping," said Devolin.
Standing
committees are composed of 12 Members of the House of Commons, and
party representation is roughly proportional to the number of
seats each party has in the House. In the 39th Parliament, that
means 5 Conservatives, 4 Liberals, 2 Bloc Quebecois and 1 NDP
member on each committee.
Previously,
Devolin has served on the House of Commons Standing Committees on
Human Resources, Social Development & the Status of Persons
with Disabilities, Citizenship & Immigration, and Agriculture
& Agri-Food. He will also continue his position as the
Government Liaison with the Korean Community.
