“DEVOLIN
ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR CENOTAPH AND MEMORIAL RESTORATION IN
MINDEN
”
MINDEN,
ON –
Local
MP Barry
Devolin announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg
Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a contribution of up to
$7,105 to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #636 (Minden).
The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada’s
Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program, will be used to help
restore and conserve the Haliburton County Cairn in
Minden
.
“The
Haliburton County Cairn will have a beautiful new location in the
heart of
Minden
Village
,” said
Devolin. “However,
no matter where the cairn is located, its message of remembrance
will remain strong.”
The
Haliburton County Cairn honours the sacrifices made by the local
Veterans who served the First and Second World Wars and the Korean
War. Funds provided
will be used to move the cenotaph to a designated community garden
in the centre of the
Village
of
Minden
.
“There
is always a need for a place where people young and old can come
together and honour the men and women who served our country,”
said Minister Thompson. “Supporting
these memorials is one way that our government is ensuring that
our Veterans are remembered in communities across the country.”
The
Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across
Canada
to preserve the memory of those who have served our country.
Through partnerships with community groups and local
organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, war
dead and significant events, are maintained with the standard of
care and dignity that they deserve.
