LINDSAY – Local MP Barry Devolin announced today he will complete his current term, but will not be a candidate in the 2015 federal election. Devolin made his announcement at the Annual General Meeting of the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock riding association for the Conservative Party of Canada.
“It has been a great honour serving as your Member of Parliament,” said Devolin. “I appreciate the trust and faith placed in me and my staff, as well as the kindness and generosity shown by the vast majority of people across this riding.”
“Earlier today we held our 100th Passport Clinic in Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. Perhaps that makes it a fitting day to make this announcement, given the priority we’ve always put on constituent service.”
Devolin said he has no plans for the future, and that he and his family will consider a variety of possibilities. “After considerable reflection, Ursula and I decided it’s the right time to make this decision, and then consider the next chapter in our lives.”
Devolin also explained he was announcing his plans at this time so that the local Conservative riding association would have sufficient time to nominate a new candidate and prepare for the next federal election, expected in October 2015.
“I’m not actually leaving,” Devolin reminded people. “I will continue to work on local priorities, such as the future of the Trent Severn Waterway, for the next two years.”
Devolin was first elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2006, 2008 and 2011. For the past five years, he has served as Assistant Deputy Speaker in the House of Commons.
