Ice Cream Sunday
Devolin Column
(Sept 8)
As you may have seen in my latest householder, I’m holding my 1st Annual Ice Cream Sunday on Sunday September 18, 2005 at Kawartha Settlers Village in Bobcaygeon.
Being that this is the first time I’ve done such an event I’ve been fortunate to partner with Kawartha Dairy, The Kawartha Lakes Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kawartha Lakes-Haliburton, Kawartha Settlers Village, Burns Bulk Foods in Lindsay and the Victoria County Milk Producers. All six organizations have been excellent to work with and I appreciate their support.
The Kawartha Dairy Company - a 100% locally owned and operated dairy based in Bobcaygeon - is a processor of premium quality Kawartha brand milk and ice cream products, famous throughout Ontario for over 65 years.
Kawartha Lakes Boys and Girls Club exists to enrich the lives of children and youth in the City of Kawartha Lakes by providing leadership in delivering a broad range of programs which enhance their personal growth and development.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Programs are all about matching energetic, promising young people, aged 6 to 16, with qualified volunteers in one-to-one or small group friendships. Couples for Kids matches children with an adult couple, both 20 years or older, who have been together for over one year.
Kawartha Settlers' Village is a fascinating collection of historic homes and buildings from Bobcaygeon and Kawartha districts on the site of what was once a thriving Kawartha farm. The village is also home to the Kawartha Region Arts and Heritage Society. At the village you can experience the history of our area and see what life was like for pioneers of this area.
Agriculture and the agri-food sectors are major contributors to the economy in Kawartha Lakes with farm gate sales generating $86.1 million in the 2001 Canada Census. As I’ve said many times, working to ensure agriculture is a strong industry is a personal priority of mine and I thank all those who have provided me with information about their commodity and all those who have volunteered their time to scoop ice cream on the 18th.
The goal of my Ice Cream Sunday is to give people of the community the chance to not only sample of the country’s best locally produced ice cream, but also to experience Kawartha Settlers Village (which I think is one of the best undiscovered gems in the riding).
It’s also a chance for the family to make a day out of it – the main street of Bobcaygeon is a shoppers’ paradise and you can enjoy watching the boats make their way through Lock 32. If you come early enough there are many fabulous restaurants and coffee shops which will be open for a delicious lunch.
As an added bonus, the Bobcaygeon and Area Chamber of Commerce is holding their 9th annual Cruisefest Antique Classic & Custom Car Show from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Bobcaygeon Fairgrounds.
For those of you who are coming from the Lindsay-area and are unable to drive to Bobcaygeon, I’ve arranged to have a 48-seat bus provide free transportation from the Kawartha Lakes Boys and Girls Club in Lindsay to Kawartha Settlers Village in Bobcaygeon. The bus will leave Lindsay at 1:30 and return at 4:00pm. The bus is free of charge but seats are limited so you will need to call my Constituency Office at (705) 324-2400 or (866) 688-9881 to reserve a space.
I’m looking forward to seeing you there.
