DEVOLIN ANNOUNCES $63,000 IN FUNDING FOR NEW HORIZONS
PROJECTS
LINDSAY: Local MP Barry Devolin, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and the Honourable Marjory LeBreton, Leader of the Government in the Senate and Secretary of State (Seniors), today announced $63,000 in funding for three projects through the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP).
The successful applicants are as follows:
* Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Elder Abuse Prevention Network / funding in the amount of $19,000. The money will be used for a Through My Eyes Seniors Program. Volunteers will create a travelling photography exhibit about elder abuse prevention and will also produce a 2010 large print calendar.
* Township of North Kawartha / funding in the amount of $25,000 for a Computers for Seniors program. Seniors will connect isolated seniors with the on-line resources they require to use the computer as a means of communicating with other seniors, family and youth in the community.
* Haliburton Highlands Arts Council / funding in the amount of $19,000 for Haliburton Visible Voices. It will allow seniors active in the arts community to link with senior residents of two local long-term care facilities and isolated seniors living at home but are interested in making art.
“The Government of Canada is proud to support seniors in strengthening our communities and building our country,” said Devolin. “These projects will encourage seniors in my riding to continue sharing their skills, wisdom and experience to benefit others.”
“The staff and volunteers of each of the successful applicants should be commended for their hard work in the communities they serve as this area is a better place because of them,” stated Devolin. “These projects help reduce the risk of social isolation among older adults by promoting their ongoing involvement in the community.”
NHSP provides grants to support a range of community-based projects across Canada that encourage seniors to contribute to their communities through social participation and active living. Projects support broad national objectives and regional priorities.
With two additional components of the New Horizons for Seniors Program – Capital Assistance and Elder Abuse Awareness – the overall budget for the program is now $35 million per year.
