DEVOLIN ANNOUNCES $1.75 MILLION FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN FENELON FALLS

FENELON FALLS – The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the City of Kawartha Lakes today celebrated the opening of 25 new affordable rental units. This project is supported by $1.75 million in funding through the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

Barry Devolin, Member of Parliament for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation; Rick Johnson, MPP Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; Ric McGee, Mayor of Kawartha Lakes; and Sandra Barrett of the Fenelon Area Independent Living Association (2007) attended the ceremony.

“The Government of Canada is committed to making affordable housing available in Ontario and across Canada for those who need it most,” said Devolin. “The FAILA Apartments will help seniors and individuals with special needs access safe and suitable housing, and build a stronger future for themselves.”

“Through the construction of safe affordable housing, we are helping vulnerable people establish and maintain the stability that many of us take for granted,” said Johnson. “Housing development like the FAILA Apartments will make a positive difference in the lives of the people who call them home.”

“As a Social Housing Service Provider we are encouraged that the Federal Government has put roughly $4 billion on the table for social housing in Canada over the next 2-5 years, and that the Province and Federal Government are now recognizing that there is an important linkage between economic wellbeing and Social Housing,” said Ms. Barrett. “FAILA would like to express out thanks to all levels of government for the role they played in helping to make our Fenelon Falls project a reality.”

Today’s announcement recognized the official opening of FAILA Apartments, a 25-unit complex sponsored by the FAILA Non-Profit Housing Corporation. The $3.59 million project will be occupied by seniors and individuals with special needs.
