DEVOLIN AND JOHNSON ANNOUNCE $800,000 FOR THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF KAWARTHA LAKES

LINDSAY – Local MP Barry Devolin, on behalf of the Government of Canada and local MPP Rick Johnson, on behalf of the Government of Ontario, today announced an investment in partnership with the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes to construct a new building. This total investment of $800,000 will help to create local jobs in Kawartha Lakes and support abandoned, abused and neglected animals in our community.

“I am proud today to be jointly announcing funding for a project that will get shovels in the ground, jobs created, and enable this organization to enhance its services for years to come,” said Devolin. “Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government has announced an historic number of projects to help strengthen our communities, including here with the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes.”

“Today’s investment is yet again another demonstration of the McGuinty government’s commitment to strengthening our communities’ not-for-profit sector in Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock,” said Johnson. “This investment will not only help deliver valued community services, help create jobs, and stimulate our local economy, but will address both the immediate and long-term animal care needs of our community.”

“Currently, the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes is executing the first phase of an ambitious plan to address both the immediate and long-term animal care needs of our community,” said Rob Mabe, President of the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes. “The funding will help us expand our capacity in terms of animal intake (cats in particular) and better deal with the estimated 25,000 feral cats within the City of Kawartha Lakes.”

The Governments of Canada and Ontario and the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes are each investing one-third of the total project cost for a total of $1.2 million. Canada’s funding is part of its new national Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, under Canada’s Economic Action Plan unveiled in January 2009. Ontario’s matching contribution is provided through the 2009 Ontario Budget – Confronting the Challenge: Building Our Economic Future.

Canada and Ontario are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that help communities improve their infrastructure.
