DEVOLIN AND JOHNSON ANNOUNCE INVESTMENT IN PARKS AND TRAILS IN ALGONQUIN
PARK
LINDSAY: Local MP Barry Devolin, and local MPP Rick Johnson, today announced stimulus funding that will benefit local workers and the local economy, and improve local infrastructure for years to come.
Today’s investment of $1.2 million in joint federal and provincial funding will create a 30 kilometre trail and rehabilitate the road network in Algonquin Park.
“By partnering with the province of Ontario we are boosting local economies, creating jobs and getting shovels in the ground,” said Devolin. “Investments in these projects stimulate the economy, enhance local services and foster vibrant, dynamic tourist destinations.”
“I’m pleased the federal and provincial governments continue to work together to stimulate the economy,” said Rick Johnson. “This funding will improve the infrastructure in Algonquin Park and help boost local tourism.”
FUNDING DETAILS
Algonquin Park Portage Store Trail: $250,000 from both the federal and provincial governments to create a 30 kilometre trail connecting the campgrounds to the Portage Store at Algonquin Park.
Algonquin Road Rehabilitation, $350,000 from both the federal and provincial governments to rehabilitate the road network. This will include improvements to pavement, tar and chip, and gravel surfaces.
The Government of Canada contribution for this project is being provided through the $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, a key component of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, which invests in construction-ready infrastructure projects that can be completed by March 31, 2011.
The contribution from the Government of Ontario will be from the two-year, $32.5 billion infrastructure commitment laid out in the 2009 Ontario Budget – Confronting the Challenge: Building Our Economic Future.
During these challenging economic times, the governments of Canada and Ontario have taken steps to get shovels in the ground and funding into targeted infrastructure projects across the province.
