DEVOLIN SIDELINED AFTER A SECOND DETACHED RETINA

OTTAWA – Local MP Barry Devolin is resting at home following a second surgery on the same eye to repair a detached retina.

In late March, Devolin underwent surgery to repair a detached retina in an Ottawa Hospital. However, on Easter Monday, Devolin noticed his vision was deteriorating and went to the Haliburton Hospital for a check-up. Less then 2 hours later, Devolin and his wife were driving to Ottawa after it was discovered his retina had detached again.

As such, Devolin underwent a second surgery last Thursday, this time more serious. After a follow up appointment on Friday, Devolin was released and is now resting at his home in Haliburton.

Based on what the doctors have told him, because this was major surgery, the recovery will take longer than last time. Devolin expects to be away from work for 2 or possibly 3 weeks.

“This is frustrating, but I know I need to do whatever is necessary to get my sight back,” said Devolin. “The worry now is that each time it detaches, the odds of getting all the sight back is reduced.”

The doctors have told me that the chances of recovering 100 percent of his vision decreases each time the retina detaches,” said Devolin. “One time was okay. Two is a problem. Three would probably require very major surgery or loss of vision.”
