DEVOLIN ANNOUNCES $98,500 IN FUNDING FOR KAWARTHA HERITAGE IN FENELON FALLS

FENELON FALLS – Local MP Barry Devolin, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages today announced $98,500 in funding to Kawartha Heritage from the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program

Kawartha Heritage will use the money to restore the Maryboro Lodge in Fenelon Falls in time for its 175th anniversary in 2012. The objective is to replicate the original façade interior and grounds of this estate and will include period paneling, pine floors, shutters and heritage gardens.

“Our Government is proud to support Kawartha Heritage,” said Devolin. “By partnering with volunteer committees that support activities celebrating our shared history and our rich cultural diversity, we are fulfilling our commitment to strengthen our communities and support arts, culture and heritage.”

“The establishment of Maryboro represents the beginning of Fenelon Falls, which grew out of this estate. In fact, the lodge is the first permanent home and oldest remaining structure in the area,” said local historian Glenn Walker. “We will use the funding from the federal government to restore Maryboro Lodge to its original appearance.”

Maryboro Lodge is located in downtown Fenelon Falls adjacent to the Trent Severn Waterway. Kawartha Heritage is a recently incorporated, non-profit organization overseen by a volunteer committee. Their stated objective is to undertake and promote historical research of the Kawarthas, share information, encourage preservation of the area’s heritage and collaborate with other groups sharing similar objectives.

The Government of Canada created the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program in September 2007. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations throughout Canada this year.
