DEVOLIN ANNOUNCES $68,300 IN FUNDING FOR NEW HORIZONS PROJECTS

LINDSAY: Local MP Barry Devolin, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and the Honourable Marjory LeBreton, Leader of the Government in the Senate and Secretary of State (Seniors), today announced $68,300 in funding for three projects through the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP).

The successful applicants are as follows:

Community Care of the City of Kawartha Lakes / funding in the amount of $25,000. The money will be used for their Celebrating a Quarter Century of Caring Volunteers Program. Seniors will plan and hold events to promote the importance of volunteering in the community of Kawartha Lakes, thereby reducing the risk of isolation.
Haliburton County Community Radio Association / funding in the amount of $18,300 for a Seniors Hour on Canoe-FM radio show. Seniors will lead a weekly radio program directed at seniors' topics in the Haliburton area, helping to raise awareness of seniors' issues.
Supportive Initiative for Residents in the County of Haliburton (SIRCH) / funding in the amount of $25,000 for Memories for Life. Seniors involved with SIRCH Community Services & Consulting will assist those with Alzheimer's disease to document their past through the creation of memory books and DVDs.

“The Government of Canada is proud to support seniors in strengthening our communities and building our country,” said Devolin. “These projects will encourage seniors in my riding to continue sharing their skills, wisdom and experience to benefit others.”

“The staff and volunteers of each of the successful applicants should be commended for their hard work in the communities they serve as this area is a better place because of them,” stated Devolin. “These projects help reduce the risk of social isolation among older adults by promoting their ongoing involvement in the community.”

NHSP provides grants to support a range of community-based projects across Canada that encourage seniors to contribute to their communities through social participation and active living. Projects support broad national objectives and regional priorities.
